Have you heard of George Floyd? Of course you have, he was the dude who died under a police officer’s knee in Minnesota in May of last year, and whose death was used as a pretext for civil disorder on a massive scale including destruction of billions of dollars worth of property and dozens of murders.
Have you heard of Jacob Blake? Probably. He was the dude who was shot by police in Kenosha in August of last year. According to some media outlets he was killed in this incident, although these reports of his death appear to be greatly exaggerated.
These two men had little in common beside the colour of their skin. Floyd was once a talented sportsman who trashed his career and life prospects by his addiction to drugs and ended up a small time criminal. Blake was simply a nasty piece of work, although now he is confined to a wheelchair he will probably give domestic abuse a miss from now on. Who though was Jessica Covington? She was a young black woman, a denizen of Philadelphia. She was also heavily pregnant when she was murdered unloading her car Saturday night. She was shot eleven times, including five times in the stomach. A $50,000 reward has been put up to bring her killer to justice.
Sykea Patton was another young black woman in Philadelphia; murdered in front of her 4 year old twin sons last Friday. A man has been arrested and is expected to be charged shortly.
The Patton murder appears to have been domestic, one of three dozen domestic homicides in Philadelphia so far this year. Last year there were a total of 494 murders in the city, up from 356 in 2019. Philadelphia has a population of around 1.6 million. By contrast, London, which has a much larger population, has seen 119 homicides for 2020-21 and 144 for 2019-20.
The all-time high for murders in Philadelphia was 1990 when there were exactly 500. How many of these were committed by police officers?
Unlike YouTuber AK Nation, Black Lives Matter have been strangely silent about these senseless killings although on their website they claim they are working for a world where “Black lives are no longer systematically targeted for demise”.
If that claim is sincere, they need to start in Philadelphia.
