Grave of Russo-Turkish War General unearthed in Turkey

The Russian General is thought to have died in or around 1878

Turkish builders have stumbled upon the buried body of a Russian General dating to the Russo-Turkish war of 1877-1878.

The Russian soldier had been given a Christian burial according to local sources although it is not clear what will be done with the Russian General’s remains at this point.

Russia won a decisive victory over Turkey in 1878 thus securing the independence of Serbia, Montenegro and Bulgaria after centuries of Ottoman rule. Romania also achieved independence as a result the war. At this time Batum and Kars also became part of Russia. Kars once handed back to Turkey by the Soviet Union in 1921.
