The US indictment against Julian Assange alleges that the whistleblower engaged in “conspiracy” with US Army soldier Chelsea Manning in 2010, according to a statement from the US Department of Justice.

The statement said Assange is charged with conspiracy to commit computer intrusion and alleged attempts to break the password for a classified US government computer.

The indictment alleges that Assange helped Manning crack a password stored on a US Department of Defense computer, which Manning had access to in connection with her role as an intelligence analyst.

Manning and Assange had “real-time discussions” regarding the transmission of classified documents, during which Assange allegedly encouraged Manning to provide “more information.”

“After this upload, that’s all I really have got left,” Manning allegedly told Assange, who is alleged to have replied: “curious eyes never run dry in my experience.”

Glenn Greenwald on Twitter: “The DOJ says part of what Assange did to justify his prosecution – beyond allegedly helping Manning get the documents – is he encouraged Manning to get more docs for him to publish. Journalists do this with sources constantly: it’s the criminalization of journalism pic.twitter.com/GXNjWlkFZw / Twitter”

Assange will be “presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt,” but faces a maximum of five years in prison, if convicted, the statement said.

If you want to hack a computer you do this: pull the hard drive out and install it in another computer. Nothing could more simple.

Odd. I understood Manning already had the password as part of his work … he saw the appalling war crimes therein and decided to copy them and reveal to the American public what was being done in their name. Not that most of us with our rose coloured glasses thrown away LONG ago didn’t know already, but the video of the gung-ho unprofessional chopper pilots blasting away at the journalists and then at the family who tried to rescue them will live with me for a very long time. Any time the US tries to take the moral high ground,… Read more »

Thank goodness no employee of the US government would ever dream of hacking into a computer in another country, or belonging to another government.

I tell you, it could not happen.

Meanwhile it was Manning who contacted Assange, it was Manning who actually stole the documents, and it was Manning who got pardoned by Obama, so what does that say anyway? Just like it was Comey who gave the documents to his pal with sole purpose of leaking/publishing them, has anyone even been indicted, either his pal as an accomplice, or Comey for stealing FBI government property and the NY Times for publishing them? Noooooo….. Maybe this is just a pretext to bring Assange over so he can testify who the real hacker of the DNC was (not the Russians), and… Read more »
