If M. Macron was trying to spoil Mr Putin’s speech at Valdai, the joke was on him. Mr Putin pointed out that the act was piracy, and asked rhetorically “What do we do with pirates?” (As I recall, they were usually hanged).
Later, Mr Putin compared M. Macron to Napoleon – an in-joke that no Russian will have failed to appreciate. (In 1812 Napoleon led an army estimated at 1 million men into Russia, to return with a few dozen survivors).
I like Schmerz’s reference to “autocracies”. But Russia is run on scrupulously democratic lines. It is Germany that makes a practice of disallowing popular candidates and parties from standing for election.

Not Russia is threatening the way of living in Europe and Germany- it is the political establishment with their more and more fascist approach and I really don’t think the the AfD will be any better- there are a lot of „Russian- hater“ in the AfD- they go along with NATO and 5% if GTP to NATO- they are standing steadfast on Israel’s side- and if it is Blackrock or Goldman Sachs the leader of a party is related to, doesn’t really matter.
