I can imagine the hawks in Russia are putting a lot of pressure on Putin to launch a shock and awe type of aerial attack now that the Ukraine air defense is in a diminished state. If I were in his place, I would want to make it very clear to the rest of the world that both the insanity of continuing the war, and to make the west think twice about actual involvement. Well, I must say it appears that Erdogan’s anger and action is justified if, with a new direction in military tactics over Syrian territory assisted by Russian bombing, and involving currently Turkish controlled areas, has commenced without prior Russian consultation with Turkey.

In the present matter of POW release, Putin should be discussing the matter with Erdogan. Expressed outrage in Russia, wherever it comes from, is premature. If that outrage gathers weight, it could be damaging to harmony in future relationship. The man Erdogan should not be quickly misunderstood in Russia, or labelled and dismissed to be merely tolerated in seeking advantages where possible, because that would be sensed to be shallow, untrustworthy agreement, rather than respectful. Thank you for your insights, Alexander! In the case of the released Azov commanders, what is their actual role in Ukraïne? Are they not like brown shirts thugs that keep President Zelenskiy in line? Could it be that, as the counter-offensive is going nowhere at this crucial juncture and that NATO will reject Ukraïne, Zelenskiy might be tempted to reconsider all past NATO promises and consider breaking rank?
