It was not a grocery, it was supermarket. AFAIK goods in America is also quite cheap compared to most countries which have VAT tax.

I thought grocery is smaller shop that sells only food. Maybe I am wrong. I know English mostly from internet, not practical life.
AFAIK America does not have value added tax, prices are usually lower than in Europe. You can easily check on Amazon. When buying on American Amazon, I have to pay additional tax.
So why shouldn’t Russians have a better standard of living? Their standard of living is higher because they have competent people running the country at all levels. I would have thought that was obvious. Moscow subways, even in Soviet times, were always beautifully kept.
