Mr Stubb is presumably well aware that the time when a ceasefire is agreed in Ukraine will be “never”. That make it an ideal time to which to defer decisions.

If Mr Stubb wants to recant Finland’s foolish decision to join NATO, his course is clear. He should repair to Moscow and kneel humbly before Mr Putin, before offering up his petition.

Finland and Sweden were effective Axis Power allies in WWII. Finland was quite aligned to Germany. Sweden played the neutral player while shipping war goods to German industry. Today, Sweden as a major arms producer, suddenly has to find cover under NATO, for its own actions in the past and today. Recall Romania and Bulgaria were killing Soviets with joy in WWII.
