(112.international) – In Mariupol, local residents held a protest against the dismantling of the monument to Banderivtsi of World War II, 0629 reports.

Protesters criticized the dismantling of the monument and called it “an act of vandalism,” and those who demolished it “fascists and banderivtsi”.

The participants of the protest said that they were afraid of installing instead of the monument of memorial sign to Symon Petliura or the trade sites.

At the same time, those who supported the dismantling were also present at the protest.

“Metal structures are rotten, the monument can collapse at any moment and pose a danger to people. Therefore, it was decided to dismantle it,” Viktor Kamyshyn, head of Mariupol district administration said.

Officials promise to establish the same memorial instead of this one, but renewed.

Law enforcement officers were also present at the site.

During the action, there were no clashes, the agency notes.

As it was reported earlier the concept of the project of Babi Yar Memorial will be presented in Kyiv in November 2017. This was stated by the member of the Supervisory Board of the project Natan Sharansky on Thursday at a press conference, the press service of Kyiv administration reported.

In addition, Natan Sharansky, Vitali Klitschko noted that the Memorial Holocaust Center Babi Yar in Kyiv should be built at the same level as Yad Vashem in Jerusalem and the Holocaust Memorial in Washington.
