IMHO Mr Assad deserves great credit and a measure of gratitude. For nearly 25 years he kept Syria alive as a going concern – as, essentially, an amateur playing against professionals.

So glad to know that the family is safe. A Syrian friend told me long ago when Bashar was being criticised for his torture and prisons, that it was his uncles who were running the show as they had a great deal of power, but nobody mentions them, unless Alexander does a bit further in this report.
