The idea that the US government “allows” China to buy oil from Iran is beyond surreal. The US government has no power to do anything of the kind. If it tries to stop the trade, it may get a bloody nose.
Mr Trump’s withdrawal from the JCPOA was presumably on the basis that, since the Iranians had been meticulously complying with it, they were not feeling enough pain.
It seems that, in recent years, the USA imposes agreements only in order to squeeze its designated victims into non-compliance, which provides a casus belli. Much as FDR did to Japan in 1939-41.
They really don’t do diplomacy. Just threats of war and war.
Mr Mercouris asks what purpose is served by the USA being beastly to Iran. I see it as precisely analogous to the behaviour of a boss chimp who, from dawn to dusk, routinely goes around biting, hitting, and generally bullying all the others in his troop. It’s instinctive on his part, but it serves a real purpose: to make sure they remember who is boss.
For some reason I find it very easy to picture Mr Trump as a dominant chimp.
If the US government wishes to attack Iran on the pretext of nuclear proliferation, shouldn’t it first deal with Israel’s far more serious offences against non-proliferation which took place 60 years ago and continue today? Iran has never threatened to destroy all of civilisation if it loses a war, while Israel has.
I believe that the UN may have passed some resolutions on Israel, all of which have been completely ignored.
The British Council is NOT part of the UK government. I know because my father worked for the British Council 1946-1972 and suffered a good deal of hardship for that very reason. On one post he wore two hats, as British Council Representative and Cultural Attache at the UK Embassy – but that was a matter of his employment only.
Of course the Russians are refusing discussions! Over and over and over the West has lied to them, conned them, deceived them, and gone back on its commitments. Now even the Russians have finally been convinced that “the only language they understand is force”.
So force it will be all the way in.
Does the US even have 3350 ERAMs to send to Ukraine? According to The War Zone, “In January 2024, the U.S. Air Force issued its first public contracting notice regarding ERAM, a request for information (RFI)…. The RFI also called for a design that a manufacturer could build 1,000 within two years, or an average of nearly 42 per month….Then, in July 2024, the service disclosed that Ukraine was the intended recipient of ERAM, a precision-guided air-launched standoff munition that it was poised to start developing. A request for proposals (RFP) called for proposals from 16 companies, without naming them.”… Read more »
