Contrary to Dr Sachs, I think that US interventions that ruin the target country are working as intended. The analogy that seems apt is with the way spiders feed. Did I hear Professor Sachs call Barack Obama “a nice man”? I am amazed that such a distinguished scholar should seem unaware that “a man may smile and smile, and yet be a villain”.

I disagree with Mr Mercouris that organisations like the UN help preserve peace. The reality is slightly different, and corresponds exactly to the Melian Dialogue.

“[R]ight, as the world goes, is only in question between equals in power, while the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must”.

In that sense the USA, Russia, and China are equals in power. Therefore they can discuss what is right and what is wrong, and interact only through negotiation and diplomacy. That is so whether or not the UN exists.
