Rhod, I don’t think the Russians want the ruble to be strengthen; I don’t think they are at all interested in the peculiar western practice of currency speculation. What’s more, they don’t really need to buy many foreign goods, Russia is quite self-sufficient. What is of concern to Russia is the cost of petroleum and gas to their export customers; at 80 cents, Russian energy is eminently affordable and therefore attractive.
