Is it actually possible to discuss Afghanistan without mentioning the word opium? The United Nations has documented repeatedly the steady rise of opium production since the U.S. invasion. Even worse, heroin production has exploded upward in Afghanistan since the invasion. The implications of this should be clear and the rational behind the military adventure should be obvious. Heroin addiction is an industry generating over100 billion dollars each year and 90 percent of the opium grown in the world comes from Afghanistan. Concerned Citizen, I agree with what you say – the US Oligarchs had a wonderful 20 years when the US taxpayers supported a senseless war while US Oligarchs earned trillions from the opium trade via sales, as well as from the privatization of the US prison system which grew so big it earned the US the title of Incarceration Nation. As the vast majority of those in those private prisons were the very poor and people of color, the oligarchs no doubt found it to be a small price to pay. So why the sudden change? The allies of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on Wednesday agreed to pull out all of their armed forces from Afghanistan after the United States announced that its troops would leave the country by Sept. 11.

Helga, Thanks for the clarification. Your point about the incarceration nation is well taken. Thanks to the endless war heroin is now cheaper in America than liquor. From the view of an oligarch, the cost of heroin addiction on lives and families is incidental to the greater goals of profits and destruction of the fabric of American society. Thus the endless war has been a grand success for the puppet masters. Given that the Taliban is and always was a mercenary army we can assume the flow of opium and now heroin will continue.
