For the EU to impose sanctions on Nord Stream may seem odd; but remember that the USA, a fellow NATO member, actually blew it up.
The Chinese, as usual, had a witty and convincing take on the matter.
Surely Mr Merz intends to use EU sanctions to diffuse responsibility for the lack of gas still further.
I have long believed that one of the main practical purposes of modern governments is precisely to diffuse responsibility, so that no official can ever be blamed for anything. That would certainly explain a lot of their actions.
Why would Russia, after all the investment to divert gas to the east and to the south want to send gas back to the way it was? The gas is finite. At least Asia actually respects the fact that Russia is supplying them with gas, something the West is incapable of.
I suspect that the German government would like to “quell” all domestic debates without exception. Politics would be so much simpler if no one disagreed with the rulers.
It may seem a fine point of language, but I believe that Mr Xi would object to the description of China as Russia’s “ally”. Rather, he seems to prefer that all nations are on friendly terms and prepared to help one another on an ad hoc basis. He is dead set against alliances, which he consider too rigid and provocative. I very much appreciate Mr Mercouris’ closing words. We live in difficult and dangerous times. When I was young, in the 1960s and 1970s, I would never have believed a time would come when British citizens had to be so careful about what they say.
