I seem to remember reading not long ago that the Russian soldiers who have fought and are fighting in Ukraine do not want a peace agreement. They feel it would be a betrayal of their fallen comrades; they want to finish the job.
I understood that the meeting on Friday was to discuss many issues between the US and Russia, not just Ukraine, so none of the EU Europeans or wannabe EU Europeans have a place at that table.
