I am not sure I agree with Alexander on a lot about the Viet Nam war. The casualties alone might not have tipped the balance as opposed to the economic cost (which bankrupted the US and from which it has never recovered)…but the public opposition to the draft….the peace movements (completely absent these days)… were very powerful. Alexander, it was often mentioned during the 60’s that Vietnam had (and still has) extensive off-shore oil reserves. Exxon wanted to explore deposits, insiders were paid, and leases were being discussed. North Vietnam didn’t want to give away the oil to the majors. An old NY Times article (Apr 27,1975) said,”Exploration activities by companies such as Exxon, Mobil Oil Corporation, Shell Oil Company, Sun Oil Company, Cities Service Company and Marathon Oil Company began in July, 1973, when the Saigon Government awarded its first leases.“
