I just read that Turkish presidential candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu said that if he wins the election, he will build a highway that will connect Turkey to China and this highway will pass through Iran, ignoring Baku on this project. Kilicdaroglu showed a map of this highway. This, hopefully, sounds like a leader who will cement relations with Russia, China and Iran. Fingers crossed?
“…build a highway that will connect Turkey to China and this highway will pass through Iran” The Turkey to Iran section is certainly feasible, but the section from Iran to China is not, as the highway would have to go through some of the Stan Nations. A Turkmenistan and Tajikistan route would be preferable and the other options are either through Pakistan or Afghanistan. But Kemal Kilicdaroglu route looks like it would go through Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. I am here at my summer home on the Mediterranean in Türkiye. Things are heating up here quickly in the past few days. The Mayor of Istanbul was attacked by some stone throwers in the Easter city of Erzurum just a couple of days ago. He is extremely popular figure Istanbul and a vocal crtic of Erdoğan. There exist a fairly vibrant opposition and pro Kilicdaroglu press. They are playing up this incident as a direct provocation against Kilicdaroglu and the election.
