Putin’s address is reminiscent of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address starting “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal” but on the international level. Putin says here that four score (80) years ago, our fathers brought forth in the world a new international organization, with a charter for all countries that is like the US constitution for its citizens, in that it includes equality, respect for sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs, and the resolution of disputes through dialogue. Putin says that the world is engaged in a struggle to preserve these principles.

Larry thinks that Putin should cut off all talks with the Trump administration because it constantly lies and has complete contempt for international law. I agree that Trump has shown such contempt, which I deplore as against international law as stated in the UN Charter. However, I disagree with him and agree with Ray McGovern about this. Putin’s overriding concern is to avoid a nuclear war, and if Trump really is increasingly erratic because of senile dementia as described by Johnson, which McGovern does not deny, that is all the more reason for Putin to humor him and treat him with kid gloves. I think Putin has better judgment than Larry.
