why did russia leave most of its foreign exchange reserves abroad? canada keeps all its reserves at home. this was very foolish.
Unless Canada stores its foreign currency in banknotes on pallets….(or in gold bullion) it is impossible to keep foreign exchange reserves anywhere except in the country which issues the currency.
If Canada has foreign exchange reserves in Yen, eg, those yen are just an entry in the Japanese Central Bank in Tokyo to the effect that the Canadian Central Bank has x billion yen in its account. Ditto….Canada’s dollars are in the CCB account at the Fed in DC, Canada’s sterling are in the CCB account at the Bank of England in London.
