Now that the House of Lords is so heavily populated by political appointees, I refer to it as the “House of Cronies”.

I think it’s unfair to bracket Liz Truss with Sir Keir Starmer. The worst one can say of her is that she was incompetent or ignorant, although I think she was just naive. Her ideas may have been quite sensible, but they were politically impractical. Sir Keir is the opposite: his only strength seems to be political adeptness. In our present deplorable system people like Sir Keir do much better; but in a better system I would hope Liz Truss would get a fairer hearing. The system of knights and lords has been totally devalued by the type of people appointed: Starmer because he was DPP; Beckham because he played good football many years ago; Mandelson because…well because he was someone’s friend. The latter all turn up regularly at the House of Lords to collect their freebies and for no other reason. If none of the hereditary peers attend, I can’t see the point of it.
