Katie Halper interviews Chris Gilbert, a professor of political studies at Universidad Bolivariana de Venezuela, discussing the ongoing challenges and strategies Venezuela is employing against U.S. imperialist aggression. Gilbert says that Venezuela has been forced to make a strategic retreat in its Bolivarian revolution by conceding the US control over its oil. Such retreats are sometimes unavoidable and necessary, as Lenin often pointed out. But such a strategic retreat should not be confused with surrender or selling out to the imperialist enemy. Those who characterize it as such are imperialist propagandists or victims of such propaganda. There has been no “regime change” in Venezuela. It continues to have a strong socialist party, the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) founded by Hugo Chávez in 2008 to consolidate left-wing and socialist factions in a single organization. These are revolutionary Marxist-Leninist socialists, not Trotskyites or some other kind of fake “socialist”. They are just biding their time and organizing their defenses until more favorable conditions arise.

RE: “These are revolutionary Marxist-Leninist socialists, not Trotskyites or some other kind of fake “socialist”.”
Leninism supports the idea of a dictatorship of the proletariat, and the importance of internationalism, believing that revolutions should occur globally rather than in isolation.
Trotskyism, calls for a permanent revolution to implement world socialism, through continuous global revolution.
Leninism and Trotskyism are six of one, half a dozen of the other, which is a distinction without a difference.
