I have always thought that the independence of Ukraine was one of the greatest tragedies of history. Since 1971 the road has led ever downwards, and huge numbers of people have died, been wounded, been bereaved, or displaced.
Why on earth did the leaders of the USSR and Russia allow such a grievous blow to Russia’s security? Think how much it has cost them, and only now are they beginning to think about getting back to square one.

(1) USSR fell apart +/- 1990(?), so any arrangement re Ukraine pre-1990 became invalid post-1990. (2) Post-1990 Russia had major problems, and luckily “cometh the hour cameth the man” in the shape of Putin. But he had a LOT to fix; (3) in 2014 Rus was not financially capable of beating the West – Rus/Putin had to bide their time; and Putin still had faith in the sanity of European Epstein-Class plants; (4) Feb 2022, Rus/Putin finally felt strong enough, and pushed into a corner enough (Ukr getting nukes) to take action.
