Patrick Henningsen has just returned from Iran. From his account, Iran is the most democratic country in the world, and its people are solidly behind the government they voted for on every level, from local to national. That is why they have successfully resisted sanctions and every attempt at regime change for 47 years. The Supreme Leader is something like a one-man Supreme Court who interprets the constitution of the Islamic Republic and decides what is and is not constitutional, but does not interfere in most executive decisions and political campaigns. Unlike Western countries, Iran does not have an oligarchy that makes all the important decisions behind the scenes. It is blessed by not having one single billionaire. Its politicians actually represent the interests of its people.
