The tradition of the Olympic Truce comes from ancient Greece and dates back to 776 BC. The truce, i.e. the “laying down of arms”, was announced before and during the Olympic Games to ensure that the host city of Elis would not be attacked and that athletes and spectators could travel safely to the Games and return peacefully to their respective countries. Beyond the practice of manifestation, the truce referred to the sanctity of the games, a sanctity which, due to the ancient Greek religious context, is completely absent from the modern Olympic games, which, in addition to being projected as a means of frivolous globalization, are characterized by ever-increasing materialism and secularization.

In 1992, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) renewed the ancient Greek sacred truce during the modern Games. The ceasefire was revived by United Nations Resolution 48/11 of 25 October 1993 and by the United Nations Millennium Declaration on World Peace and Security. The objectives of the Armistice revival were multiple: a) to offer humanitarian support to warring countries, b) to create opportunities for dialogue and reconciliation, c) to connect youth with the promotion of Olympic ideals, and d) to promote sport for the creation of contacts between warring communities.

However, the absence of metaphysics from the modern Olympic games constitutes their “Achilles heel” in general and especially as a symbol of peaceful coexistence. It is no coincidence that the Olympic Truce has been violated many times in the 20th and 21st centuries:

In 2002 the United States, host of the 2002 Winter Olympics, introduced a cease-fire resolution at the UN that did not call for an end to its hostilities with Afghanistan, excluding itself from the cease-fire. In 2008 there was the Russo-Georgian war and in 2014 the Russian annexation of Crimea. 2022 saw the start of military involvement in Ukraine, the start of which was between the closing of the Winter Olympics and the start of the Winter Paralympics.

As a result of the crisis of the Olympic ideals the Olympic Truce is not observed either in Israel’s War against Palestine in the Gaza Strip or on the Ukrainian front. Russia and Belarus have been banned from the games in France, while Israel is participating. The involvement of politics and economics in the modern Olympic Games through their commercialization poses a threat to the credibility of the games in the world public opinion. Failure to implement the Olympic Truce is a failure of the Olympic Games in general.
