The US Navy is wisely afraid to enter the Persian Gulf. A few thousand US Marines have been dispatched to either reinforce American bases in Iraq, or evacuate them. These bases are under fire from Iraqi Shia militia and may be overrun.
The big news is that Iran will allow Iraqi oil to go through the Strait of Hormuz. This doesn’t make sense because as this short video from two years ago explains, all Iraqi oil revenue goes to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and Americans decide who gets what. Iran has said Gulf states can transit the Strait if they promise to close American military bases. The Americans closed a few smaller bases in Iraq to prepare for this war. Only two bases in Baghdad and one in the far Kurdish north at Erbil remain. All have been under attack by drones from the Iraqi Shia militia for days, plus Iranian drones.
I suspect the Iraqi government (which has demanded American troops leave for years) agreed to tell its army to stand aside and not defend American bases. These bases also have private local security forces, but they are likely to flee once they learn the Iraqi army has left. If Iraqi militias need help, the huge Iranian army can send forces across the border. I suspect this is what Iran meant when it said Phase 2 would soon begin.
What now General Trump? Flee from these bases and Iraq’s oil revenue, or send more ground troops to defend them? Note that the USA hasn’t many ground troops in the region. Maybe Trump will get his ground war, but in Iraq!
