I wonder, though, that if the US begin to fail in Eastern Syria, they may seek to drag Turkey into the conflict as ‘NATO support’. The US are, of course, in Syria illegally, but no one seems to regard anything that the US or NATO do as a contravention of international agreements. One can only hope that, at any sign of weakness, the Iraqis rise up and then the US will be surrounded on all sides, with no ‘wagons to circle.’
Turkey likely wont assist USA in Syria especially whilst USA in the region depends upon support from Kurd militias. The Kurds themselves are divided in that region, as they dont overall see USA as an honourable partner in their quest there, and one division seeks rapprochment with Assad. BTW Kurds living there were invited as refugees by Syria many years ago last Century, and have swelled somewhat in numbers since, more joining them there.
