There are good reasons to argue against Donald Trump for the US and Israel’s war against Iran, but those who are against Trump do not always understand what they are demonstrating against.
We have this woman, a “no kings” protester, who actually has a good article about these protests on Wikipedia. The woman was tricked on the ice and answers questions about Gays of Hormuz and Straights of Hormuz quite seriously. Watch this hilarious video:

We are talking about the strategic strait between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman – the strait that some reactionary, colonialist mapmakers insist on calling the “Strait of Hormuz”. It is simply homophobic to talk about the Straights of Hormuz. Where is the support for the gays of Hormuz? Where are the rainbow flags on the tankers? Where is the pride parade between the oil tankers and the Iranian speedboats?
The vicious interviewer asked if it was perhaps “a bit homophobic” to focus on the straights of Hormuz instead of the gays of Hormuz, and she nodded in all seriousness and said: “Yes, absolutely, I agree.” Without blinking. Without hesitation. Without checking a map, an atlas or even a Wikipedia page.
Imagine that there are people out there who still think Hormuz is a strait! They think it’s about oil, shipping, Iran, China, and global supply lines. What naivety! No, it is obviously about fighting the heteronormative dominance in the Persian waters. The gays in Hormuz thank the protester. They feel seen. Finally, some are willing to sacrifice their own geographical knowledge on the altar of their cause.
The next time you stand there with your “No Kings” sign, feel free to shout loud and clear: “Free the gays of Hormuz! No straights in the strait!” We promise to send you a virtual rainbow oil tanker in return. With pride decor and everything.
