There used to be a saying about a certain man, “When he talks about his honour, count your spoons”.
Similarly, when Washington says that it is “standing down” its forces, it is time to go to maximum alertness.
There seems no need to discuss Ukrainian withdrawal from Donbas. The only question is how many of them will get out alive. With an agreement, they could all walk out tomorrow. Without, Russia will take the territory regardless, but many of the Ukrainians will have to be killed.
It would be nice for the Russians and the Ukrainians to meet. They could talk in Russian, the native language of both parties.
If Mr Rutte is dead set (so to speak) on sharing the Ukrainians’ plight, perhaps it can be arranged for similar conditions to prevail in Brussels. Some Russians, including Mr Medvedev, have made suggestions along those lines.
Nuclear discussions agreements (and any treaty) should include a number of nuclear powers. I don’t see anyone rational enough in Washington to participate in that diplomacy.
