Russia’s FSB uncovered IS terror cell in Moscow region

Russia’s Federal Security Service said Monday it had stopped the activities of an undercover cell of the Islamic State terrorist group in Moscow region.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russia’s Federal Security Service said Monday it had stopped the activities of an undercover cell of the Islamic State terrorist group (banned in Russia) in Moscow region:

“As a result of a search operation carried out on September 30, 2017, the Russian Federal Security Service stopped the activities of an extremely undercover cell of international terrorist group Islamic State.”

According to the statement, the cell, comprising Russian nationals from the North Caucasus region, was controlled by foreign emissaries. All members of the cell were detained, while two powerful improvised explosive devices, guns and grenades were confiscated.

“The members of the cell were planning to commit high-profile terrorist attacks in September 2017 in crowded places and transport infrastructure objects,”

the statement read.

A criminal investigation into the illicit production of explosives and the organization of the activity of a terrorist group is being considered.

The video footage showed the items, from which improvised explosive devices were made. The terrorists packed them with nails to achieve maximum lethal damage.
