The Russian authorities are claiming that Russia’s systems successfully withstood the WannaCry cyber attack.
Oleg Khramov, a deputy secretary of Russia’s Security Council, is reported to have told the Russian newspaper Kommersant that the cyber attack did no significant damage
We have managed to avoid serious damage due to the mentioned state system. The critical information infrastructure was ready to resist a massive spread of this virus
Russia’s “critical infrastructure’ apparently includesRussia’s includes the information systems of Russia’s defence industry, of its healthcare sector, of its transport and communications infrastructure, and the information systems of its banking, finance and energy sectors.
Overall, and despite some embarrassments – as in Britain with the shutdown of some systems of its National Health Service – the worldwide impact of the WannaCry cyber attack seems to have been quite limited, and was almost certainly much less than its authors expected. However Russia, constantly on its guard against possible cyber attacks by the US, may have been better prepared and less effected than most.
