NEW YORK (Sputnik) – A draft US proposal on the reform of the United Nations is a step toward a unipolar world, which Russia is not ready to support, a senior Russian lawmaker said Monday.
“The concept of Russia’s foreign policy clearly states that we are in favor of preserving the uncontested role of the UN, which for decades has proven that it has no alternative,”
Chairman of the State Duma Committee for International Affairs Leonid Slutsky said on the sidelines of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly.
Slutsky said that Russia views the UN Trump Reform as a major step in the “US coordinate system” towards a unipolar world order and toward a reduced role for the UN in the architecture of the 21st century.
“Today we are not ready to support this process or to declare our participation in it,”
Slutsky stressed.
The lawmaker added that Russia will decide on how to react if the US reduces its contribution to the UN in the near future.
