US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will meet within hours ahead of the UN General Assembly session scheduled to begin in New York tomorrow, reports Reuters.
The meeting is scheduled to take place at 9 p.m. local time.
The surprise announcement follows a phone call between the two earlier Sunday, in which they discussed US allegations that Russia intentionally bombed US-backed rebels in Deir ez-Zor province, where the battle against Islamic State is entering its endgame.
The Russian defense ministry has denied the allegations.
Possible topics of conversation for Lavrov and Tillerson include the war in Syria, the crisis with North Korea, and the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which the Trump administration has shown signs of wanting to abandon.
