The Russian aviation industry has done what seemed impossible after the collapse of the Soviet Union: the SJ-100, a completely domestic aircraft with its own Russian PD-8 engine, has made its first flight. Rhod Mackenzie looks at this milestone and what are its implications?

I don’t see how the statement about this plane, being the first domestically produced aircraft, can be true. Have the Russians not built numerous commercial aircraft in the past? Long before the fall of the Soviet Union?
You are correct that the Soviet Union did it but the engines were made in Ukraine and other parts in othe republics of the USSR. So this is the first solely Russian made plane.
Aeroflot flew Tupolevs for decades.
