It’s reasonable for Mr Putin to speak to Mr Trump, as the latter bears little if any responsibility for previous events in Ukraine – and has an opportunity to start with a clean slate. At minimum, Mr Putin can explain clearly, man to man, what Russia’s position is. He need make no commitment whatsoever.
I wonder if any prospective members of Mr Trump’s cabinet will be prosecuted this time around for speaking to Russian officials.
