Prof. John Mearsheimer : Will Israel Veto an American Peace?

Iran wants a complete ceasefire in West Asia including Israeli attacks on Lebanon. They will keep the Strait of Hormuz closed until Israel stops their attacks. This will cause a world economic disaster. Trump is beginning to realize what a disaster Israel has gotten him into. The only way he can get Hormuz open is by actually stopping military, economic and political support for Israel. Cursing at Netanyahu as he has now done won’t do the trick. Netanyahu believes in the power of the Israel lobby to control Trump. Nobody except his foolish followers, who constitute perhaps 20% of the electorate, takes Trump’s words seriously, not Iran and not Israel either. Trump will have to take concrete action. The Israel Lobby will pull out all the stops to prevent this, but Mearsheimer thinks Trump will have to tell the Lobby to go to hell.

Prof. Mearsheimer considers unlikely the rumor being put out by Larry Johnson and Pepe Escobar that Iran already has a nuclear weapon, probably obtained from Pakistan. He says having one or two such weapons would be destabilizing and only incentivize an aggressor to go after them. In order to have real deterrence, it is necessary to have second strike capability after a nuclear attack. This means having many nuclear weapons concealed in many places. This is something that Iran can certainly develop on its own in fairly short order if it decides to do so.
