Dr. Evangelos Venetis, Expert on Islam and the Middle East – evenetis.wordpress.com
In light of the recent multinational naval activist operation Soumout (Unwavering Determination) and the recent unsuccessful multinational activist effort by the ship Madeline to break the naval blockade of the Gaza Strip, it must be emphasized that Greece has a leading role thanks to the legacy of the important Greek activist Evangelos Pissias (1947-2024) whose demise last year (06.11.2024) has left a vacuum in pro-Palestine activism (https://evenetis.wordpress.com/obituary-3/).
One automatically thinks back to 2008 and the Greek activist epic “A Ship for Gaza” by Professor Pissias, whose admittedly invaluable contribution to International Law and the Palestinian struggle for independence deserves to be highlighted more.
Pissias’ operation laid the foundation for the annual operation that has been repeated since then with different names and crews. In the successful Operation of 2008, Pissias and the Greek Navy made history, as they surprised the Israeli occupation forces while they were asleep and broke the 41-year naval blockade of the long-suffering Gaza Strip since the Six-Day War (1967). The boats were carrying 44 people of 17 nationalities. Among them were 9 Greeks. The heroes’ welcome that Palestinian civilians and Hamas fighters gave them has been filmed (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFhkt0FM08M). Pissias and his comrades achieved what governments and armies in the region and beyond failed to do.
