I don’t understand this expression “nuclear umbrella”. An umbrella actually protects you – in principle – from rain. A “nuclear umbrella” in no way protects you from being incinerated. The most it could possibly do would be to avenge you by destroying those who killed you.
Nuclear weapons are absolutely never “defensive”.
Actually, the parties bound to act under the Minsk agreements were Ukraine (mainly), France, and Germany. Russia was only a witness and possibly guarantor.
But when Ukraine impudently flouted its obligations, what could the guarantor do? Other than take Ukraine over and straighten it out.
So they plan to borrow 140 billion euros in the taxpayers’ name. The Russians will destroy it all. Then the taxpayers will be on the hook for repaying capital and paying interest.
By the way, why are all Ukrainians so cotton-pickin’ ugly? As Nuland and Freeland bear witness, the curse extends unto the second generation at least.
