With respect to the shortage of gas for fertiliser production, how about we do it the “old” way? 33% to 40% of the waste we dump in the landfill is compostable. We could make good fertiliser from fruit and vegetable waste (from home, restaurants, and hospital kitchens), garden waste (Autumn leaves, grass clippings, location-challenged plants), and animal waste (chicken, pig, sheep, cow, and horse), fish waste from fish packers, seaweed, produce waste from supermarkets, etc.
In Australia work is being carried out experimenting with human waste as fertiliser. The waste is treated and then dried and pellitised, allowing easily spreading by current fertiliser machines. Results have been promising, but at this stage such fertiliser is only being used on animal feed lots. Tests of soil have validated the microbs and bacterialogical benefits to sub soil conditions. Humans have been using their waste for thousands of years as fertiliser, why waste a perfectly good product ?
I couldn’t agree more, Eddy. When I was growing up in England in the early 1960s, I remember homeowners getting loads of treated sewage sludge from the local sewage plant for our vegetable gardens and allotments. I believe we had to spread it and leave it exposed to sunlight for natural sterilisation from the end of the growing season until the beginning of the next. When you think (or try not to think) of the amount of “hu-poo” that almost eight billion humans produce a day, we should be treating it as a resource. As they say, waste is simply… Read more »
