BEIJING (Sputnik) – China believes that Russia plays a significant role in the settlement of regional and international conflicts, and it seeks to enhance cooperation with Moscow in this field, Chinese Foreign Ministry’s Spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Wednesday.
“Russia plays a crucial role in promotion of the settlement of international and regional conflicts, and China is ready to enhance cooperation and coordination with Russia for the sake of maintaining peace and stability in the region,”
Hua said at the press briefing.
Moscow and Beijing have a strategic partnership, and at the upcoming BRICS summit the leadership of the both countries will exchange views on the current state of affairs in the regions with increased tensions, according to the spokeswoman.
Russia has stepped up its cooperation with China following the deterioration of its relations with the West in 2014 over Ukrainian crisis. Moscow and Beijing cooperate in a number of fields, including energy, infrastructure and the military. The countries also work closely together within the framework of BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
The summit of the BRICS group of emerging economies that will take place in the southern Chinese city of Xiamen on September 3-5.
The first meeting of the group took place in 2006, back then the block was called BRIC as it was then made up of Brazil, Russia, India and China. In 2010 South Africa joined the group, thus changing the acronym to BRICS.
