Mutatis mutandis, many of Elensky’s decisions are strongly reminiscent of Hitler’s – and Churchill’s. That’s because they are essentially political decisions, overriding the better judgment of military experts. Hitler kept on declaring “fortresses” that must be held “to the last man”. Great for morale! Hitler insisted on Zitadelle (the Battle of Kursk, 1943) and the Ardennes offensive (December 1944) for political reasons. Elensky is much the same. Churchill made similar rash decisions: Gallipoli 1915, Norway 1940, Greece 1941, sending “Repulse” and “Prince of Wales” to Singapore (1941), Dieppe 1942… and on and on and on.

Valuable history lesson here. Thanks Tom! Sometimes you wish it wouldn’t go on and on and on but it does.
Why bother even having military strategists at all if you’re just going behave like cornered insects sending wave after wave of innocent men to die for no reason in a heavily one-sided battle?
Thank you both! After two years, you are finally discussing this most important subject. You might still be speculating, but I always felt that the entire war hinged on whatever exactly Boris said to Wolodymir on 9 Apr 2022. Whether threats that appealed to his fears, or flattery that appealed to his ego. Either way, his lack of courage suggests more likely that he is susceptible to threats, so I would lean that way.
I feel a bit sorry for Elensky because when the big hitters in the West promised to have his back, he could be excused for believing them, especially as he isn’t a politician and although he might have learnt a bit on the job, he is still totally out of his depth. Added to that he has been threatened from the start by Azov and Co, he has been between a rock and a hard place since the start.
