Dr Papadopoulos says that Britain and Russia were bitter rivals, both having empires that tended to expand.
But how can that be the case in the 21st century, when the British Empire is fast receding in the rear-view mirror? India, “the jewel in the crown” of Queen Victoria, is now becoming a superpower whereas Britain is far poorer and less powerful.
Britain no longer has any legitimate interests beyond Europe – certainly none that warrant military assertiveness. Russians regard it as a chihuahua barking hysterically at the bear.
Fascinating and valuable discussion. As close to reality as I think it is possible to get today.
The problem for the British is that the Russians have their country on British resources. The UK has very limited in the resources that it needs.
