The US government, and Mr Trump in particular, seem to think of themselves as analogous to the Gods of Olympus. They look down at human affairs with glorious detachment, and occasionally deign to adjudicate disagreements. Nevertheless, they sometimes take sides – as, for example, Hera took against the Trojans, and persuaded Zeus to bring about their downfall. This is the hand of Blackrock so clearly at work. They want their “investment” to be made whole and thus will argue that since the Russians have now taken possession of these territories, and their concomitant resources, that those frozen assets illegally held hostage by the west will be used to compensate them. Twisted? You bet!

I agree that people might have deserted the Labour party because of Ukraine, but from what I hear elsewhere, the main reason was not Elensky but the migrant situation which is much nearer to home. The sight of hordes of young men being accommodated in comfortable, well-heated hotels with everything provided free of charge would have caused much more anger, especially as payments to handicapped people and pensioners are being cut to pay for the government’s capricious policies to put foreigners first.
