The West and the rest

The West and the rest The world’s economic inter-dependencies are manifold and mutual. Sanctions have large network effects. The pandemic and the war taught me something I sort of knew, but not really. It is a one thing to say that the world is interconnected, as a cliché.

It may be unethical but if you take perspective from the people of Don-Bass who have lost tens of thousands of loved ones over the last 8 years. They are out for blood.

So according to Alexander, there is no such a thing as MERCENARIES, so all those in the Guantanamo hell hole should be set free immediately.

War is a bind, maybe when war is declared, it should be mandatory that either side should have exactly the same gear and soldiers. Is that your way Alexander.

It would depend on what the facts really might be, as ‘what you see is what you get’ does not always apply, most particularly in geopolitical and military matters… and most especially within the Intelligence Communities. Bear in mind: UK Intelligence agencies (and I have personally verified this direct from the horses mouth) insist on all agents + representatives keeping such employ secret… even from family and spouses… so we have no idea who these people, Aslin, etc, might really be. never be fooled by appearances, which can often be theatrics. UK Government have stated, and made legal ruling, in… Read more »

That is the same attitude of the animals who shot and tortured and burned alive Russian POWs.
If your side won’t operate under the law then you have no reasonable expectation of any reciprocal restraint.
If you make efforts to operate under the law, then you have a right to outrage and hopefully justice.

This terrible debacle will not be resolved until the Neocons in the West have been completely discredited as being responsible for the NATO expansion and aggression that has led to the war. They have to be totally ousted from any position of decision-making and power. That won’t happen until the Western Elites who run the show are economically devastated, which also heightens the risk of nuclear war. Unfortunately, they are destroying the viability of the masses of people that depend on a functioning system, especially the poorest people that are suffering from deprivation. The “silver lining of dark clouds” is… Read more »

May I include the concept that others, beholden to the military-industrial-congressional complex et.al. like ‘big oil’, who are not considered neocons but who supported their efforts should also be held accountable.

Black market arms sales may play an important role here. Keeping up the Ukrainian resistance has allowed for continual arms investment into Ukraine. Easily understood as a goal of the MIC. However, without obfuscation these arms couldn’t be diverted form the battle front to the black market. .If one drops the assumption that all members of intelligence services are above black market arms sales, then one can see an arrangement whereby a blind eye is turned, by some members of all the intelligense services involved, towards some of the armament shipped to Ukraine. Thus allowing transfer to the black market.. Blaming… Read more »

Executing captured mercenaries is NOT a violation of any international agreements. From Wikipedia: “The United Nations Mercenary Convention, officially the International Convention against the Recruitment, Use, Financing and Training of Mercenaries, is a 2001 United Nations treaty that prohibits the recruitment, training, use, and financing of mercenaries. At the 72nd plenary meeting on 4 December 1989, the United Nations General Assembly concluded the convention as its resolution 44/34. The convention entered into force on 20 October 2001[1] and has been ratified by 46 states. The convention extends on the Geneva Conventions Protocol I which in Article 47 states that a… Read more »

Nice to hear from you again. Did U.K. ratify or does that matter?

Not only have neither the UK,US or Russia even signed this convention, but the 3 combatants now sentenced do not meet the convention definition of mercenaries e.g.based on their motivation and their renumeration.

If mercenaries in Ukraine can kill people in Donbas then the people in Donbas can kill the mercenaries.

Definition of mercenary: “A mercenary, sometimes known as a soldier of fortune or hired gun, is a private individual, particularly a soldier, who takes part in military conflict for personal profit, is otherwise an outsider to the conflict, and is not a member of any other official military.”

Mercenaries willing to take part in military conflicts and kill people for personal profit ought not to whine when they are captured and have to pay the consequences.

What an simplistic arggument. The exact same could logically be argued for lawfull combatants. These 3 do not, in any case meet the legal defn of mercanaries, which is far more detailed than your dictionary one.
