I would argue that all that Zelenskiy is asking (NATO & EU membership etc) are all the things that Boris Johnson (NATO) promised him on 9 Apr 2022. Zelenskiy is desparing because he is intensely aware that rejecting peace in Istanbul, and all that Russia had been offering at that point, means that all the destruction and losses in Ukraïne since that date have been for nothing. NATO did not honour any of its promises. NATO completely duped and betrayed Ukraïne.
