The Russians began the SMO trying to avoid impact on civilian life and infrastructure. The West forced Kiev to keep doubling down, so Russia has had to keep stepping up the pressure – gradually, to minimise the harm to Ukrainian civilians, But inexorably. As long as Kiev keeps resisting – and striking Russia – that pressure will continue to increase.
Funny that Ben Wallace, of all people, should assert that the Russians are not rational. Puts me in mind of Richard Porson’s devastating reply to John Gillies, who had declared that, “We know nothing of the Greek metres”. To which Porson replied, “If, Doctor, you will put your observation in the singular number, I believe it will prove very accurate”.
