Meanwhile, pollution from sunken oil tankers has become a huge problem.

Alastair Crooke brings up an issue that he says he had not previously thought about, but I was actually ahead of him on this, because I was already wondering about the pollution from sinking all those huge oil tankers. What has happened to all the “environmentalist” Democrats? We haven’t heard a word from them about this. I suppose they think that war is a good enough reason to pollute as much as you like. But in this case, the results are immediate and very serious. The Gulf emirates are very dependent on desalination plants for their water supply (Iran is not). If they take in an oil slick, their filtration equipment is ruined. Without a water supply, these countries are all finished. By sending these tankers through Hormuz against Iranian prohibition, these countries have done to themselves what Iran could easily do if major hostilities are resumed, which is to take out every desalination plant in every Gulf country.

I would like to use this occasion to present my position on pollution and global warming. I am an environmentalist who regards pollution as a huge problem. I live a mile high in a Southern California forest because I like to breathe pure mountain air and drink pure mountain water from our artesian wells. Most of this pollution does come from the extraction and refinement of oil, its use in internal combustion engines, and products such as plastics made from oil. I hope that in the long run we will find other sources of energy, and will be able to reduce oil extraction for use in internal combustion engines dramatically. I think China is way ahead of the rest of the world with its non-polluting electric cars, and may even have developed the technology of energy extraction from windmills and solar panels to the point of being able to produce cheap energy. Fortunately for its citizens, China is not run by oil companies as we are.

I regard global warming as a separate issue. Yes, we are in a warming trend as shown by the melting of ice in the Arctic. Russia has taken advantage of this by creating new trade routes through the Arctic. As far as Russia is concerned, it seems to me that they are benefitting from this warming trend. It is producing bumper crops. Where I disagree with many people is that I don’t think it has been proved that this global warming is being caused by CO2 released by human industrial activity. I have looked at both the studies purporting to prove that there is such a connection and the studies presenting counter-arguments against these proofs, and I find the counter-arguments more convincing. I will not present these arguments here, but if anyone is interested, ask me and I will go into my reasons with you. I believe that the consensus that global warming is caused by industrial CO2 is that the science has been politicized by elites who want to deindustrialize society and reduce its population of what they regard as “useless eaters” by something like seven billion people. Any honest scientist who questions this artificial consensus is likely to lose his grant. Since I don’t think industrial CO2 is causing global warming, I also don’t think we know how long this warming trend will continue or how rapid it will be. There is also the point that more CO2 is good for plants, as every farmer or gardener with a greenhouse knows. NASA itself has published a study showing that the whole planet is getting greener from more CO2. I think CO2 is not a “pollutant”. There have been periods in the Earths history where CO2 content has been much higher than it is now, certainly not caused by human industry, and those periods were marked by lush plant growth.
