WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – Russia constitutes the most significant and advanced threat in cyberspace that the United States faces today, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford told a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on Tuesday.
“I would agree with your assessment that the most significant threat in cyberspace we face today, the most advanced capabilities are the Russians, that’s our assessment,”
Dunford said when asked to comment on the view that Russia was capable of defeating the United States in the realm of cyberspace.
The top US general argued that Russia’s cyber-capability constitutes an even greater threat because it has been combined so effectively with other elements of Russian power.
“The one thing that the Russians have effectively done is combine that cyber-capability with political influence operations, economic coercion, information operations, electronic warfare and even military posture,”
He added that Russia’s centralized command and control system has allowed the country to play even its weak hands in order to effectively advance its interests without going to war.
