“There’s no such thing as democracy” – Yanis Varoufakis

Yanis Varoufakis, a real socialist who survived as finance minister of Greece for less than six months in 2015, describes from personal experience why anyone with real integrity who will not allow himself to be coopted by the financial controllers of the “market economy” is excluded from power. George Carlin used to say that “it’s a big club, and you’re not in it”. If you misbehave by genuinely advocating the interests of the people, you are kicked out the club. Varoufakis has some unexpectedly kinds words about new British Prime Minister Andy Burnham. Instead of saying that Burnham is nothing but the next Kier Starmer, he suggests practical policies that Burnham could advocate to prevent becoming the next Starmer, such as a development bank for reviving British industry and creating jobs, requiring the Bank of Britain to back such investments. You would have to have a lot of integrity to do such a thing, and it is very unlikely that Andy Burnham, even if he has good intentions, has anything like the qualities of Yanis Varoufakis. It is extremely unlikely that he would have gotten anywhere near being Prime Minister if he had them.
