I too have read that Mr Aliev gets along well with Mr Putin. And Mr Putin has always been at pains not to burn his bridges with Israel. Allowing the USSR to dissolve itself is beginning to look like a very bad idea. Good enough politically and economically; but very dangerous strategically. It has simply allowed Russia’s enemies to crowd still closer to it. And now even Kazakhstan falls under suspicion. A win-win from Washington’s point of view. Either Russia passively accepts the situation, or it gets heavy and offends Kazakhstan – which of course wil protest its utter innocence.… Read more »

Regrettable though it may be for Syria to have a president who is a vicious, murderous terrorist, it does at least align Syria with the NATO nations.

Oh, and Israel of course. Israel is so obvious I actually forgot it for a moment.
