The really big strategic mistake was when Moscow allowed Kiev to secede. Before the Ukraine was part of the USSR, it was part of the Russian Empire. In 1991 it should have gone straight back to being part of Russia – which would have saved a million or so lives, a few score ruined towns, and counting.

Russia was not in a position to bargain then. We’re lucky Boris Yeltsin didn’t give Russia directly to America as a colony.
